Selenium, although the scientific community is not ready to herald this mineral as a miracle cure it is starting to show great promise. Studies show that it may prevent osteoarthritis, cloged arteries and boost your immune system.

Infact studies with humans suggest that low levels of selenium increase your risk of heart attacks and strokes.

A word of caution before you run out and buy a selenium supplement; too much is just as harmful as not enough. You need 55mg in a day, most adults get 100mg a day through the food you eat, more than 400mg. a day can be toxic.

The best food source for selenium are brazil nuts; one brazil nut will provide 68 to 90mg. of selenium.

A nut a day may keep the doctor away.
