Are You SAD?

The winter season brings you shorter days and much colder temperatures forcing you to spend more of your time indoors. As a result there are millions of people who suffer from a state of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). A light box and exercise have proven to be beneficial in improving the mood of those who suffer from SAD. Studies are now proving there is one more factor in this equation that not only treats but prevents the onset of SAD; you may have guest it, your diet.

A diet high in complex carbohydrates in combination with protein.

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that puts you in a good mood; complex carbohydrates increase the amount of serotonin your brain produces. Researchers found a combination of protein and carbohydrates boost the activity of carbohydrates producing more serotonin.

Great sources of complex carbohydrates and proteins are:

Whole grains, vegetables, fruits, cheese, soy burgers, nuts, seeds, turkey and chicken.

Although more research is needed there is strong evidence the omega 3 fatty acids in fish helps to fight depression. For those of you who do not like fish add walnuts and flax seed to your diet.

Make you and your mother both happy, eat your vegetables.
